When Experience Matters

When Sarah & Stafford's wedding transport broke down between the church and their reception venue, our planned 90 minutes of photography suddenly became barely 30. Our First Dunedin Wedding

My first wedding was in 2001, photographing Steev and Simone's wedding at St Joseph's Cathedral in Dunedin, followed by portraits at the iconic Dunedin Railway Station. Looking back now, it's hard to believe just how different wedding photography was at the time.

The entire wedding was photographed on ten rolls of 36-exposure film using a Canon camera I had borrowed from Canon New Zealand. There were no memory cards, no instant previews and no way to check whether I had captured the shot. Every frame mattered. Every press of the shutter came with a mixture of excitement, anticipation and, if I'm honest, a fair bit of nervousness.

At the time I was attending night classes in black and white darkroom photography at Otago Polytechnic. My tutor, Di Halstead, saw something in my work and recommended me for the wedding. I'm still grateful she did. While I had a growing passion for photography, I had never photographed a wedding before and fully understood the responsibility that came with documenting such an important day.

That first wedding taught me lessons that still shape my approach today. Technical skills are important, but people matter more. Couples remember how you made them feel, how calm you remained when things didn't go to plan, and how comfortably you fitted into their day. More than twenty years later, after photographing hundreds of weddings as a Dunedin wedding photographer, those lessons remain just as relevant.

The cameras have changed, the technology has improved and wedding photography styles have evolved, but the goal remains exactly the same as it was back in 2001: to tell the story of the day honestly and create photographs that become more valuable with every passing year.

How Dunedin Weddings Have Changed

Having photographed weddings in Dunedin since 2001, I've had the privilege of watching wedding trends come and go. Some changes have been subtle, while others have completely transformed the way couples plan and celebrate their wedding day.

Twenty years ago, church weddings were far more common. These days, many couples choose purpose-built wedding venues, gardens, wineries and outdoor locations that allow them to create a day that feels more personal and reflects who they are as a couple. Venues such as Grandview Gardens, Glenfalloch Gardens and Larnach Castle have become popular because they allow couples to celebrate and photograph their entire day in one beautiful location.

The biggest change I've noticed is that the rules have largely disappeared. It used to feel like every wedding followed the same formula — ceremony, speeches, cake cutting and first dance. Today, couples are far more likely to create a day around what matters most to them. Some weddings have no cake, some skip the speeches entirely, and others replace the traditional first dance with something completely different. There is much less pressure to follow tradition simply because it's expected.

The way couples plan weddings has changed too. Twenty years ago inspiration often came from wedding magazines and bridal shows. Today, ideas arrive instantly through Instagram, Pinterest and social media. Couples can explore venues, colour palettes, styling ideas and wedding photography from around the world before they even start planning.

Photography itself has evolved. Digital cameras replaced film, online galleries replaced proof books, and candid, story-driven photography has become increasingly popular. Couples now want photographs that capture genuine moments, real emotion and the atmosphere of the day, rather than simply a collection of posed portraits.

Despite all of these changes, some things remain exactly the same. Every couple wants to celebrate with the people they love most. Families still gather, emotions still run high, and the photographs become more valuable as the years pass. Trends will come and go, but quality, memories, family and timeless photographs never go out of fashion.

What Hundreds of Weddings Have Taught Us

After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past two decades, I've learned that no wedding day ever goes exactly to plan. The funny thing is, it rarely matters. The couple are usually the only people who know what the original plan was, so when things run late, the weather changes or a detail doesn't quite work out, nobody else notices. The guests are simply enjoying the day and celebrating with the people they care about.

One of the most important things I've learned is that couples should focus less on making everyone else happy and more on creating a day that makes them happy. It's impossible to please every family member, friend and guest, and trying to do so can add unnecessary stress. The weddings that feel the most relaxed and enjoyable are usually the ones where couples stay true to themselves and make decisions based on what matters most to them.

I've also discovered that some wedding traditions matter less than people think. Some weddings have a live band, others have a playlist and a Bluetooth speaker. Some have speeches, some don't. Some have a first dance and others skip it altogether. There is no right or wrong. One observation I've made over the years is that guests tend to dance to bands and DJs, but they drink to playlists and jukeboxes. Spend your money on the things that are important to you and don't feel pressured to include something simply because it's traditional.

From a photography perspective, couples almost always underestimate how much time they need. Everything takes a little longer on a wedding day than it does in everyday life. Allowing extra time for portraits, travel and family photographs removes stress and creates space to actually enjoy the experience rather than rushing through it.

Family photos are another area where simplicity usually wins. They can sometimes feel like the least exciting part of the day, so I always recommend keeping the list manageable and focusing on the people who matter most. The goal isn't to photograph every possible combination of relatives — it's to make sure the important people are included and then get everyone back to celebrating as quickly as possible.

Most of all, I've learned that the moments couples remember most are often the ones they never saw happen. A proud parent wiping away a tear, grandparents laughing together, children playing under tables, or friends sharing a quiet conversation. Long after the flowers have faded and the trends have changed, those genuine moments are what make wedding photographs truly valuable.

Smails Beach

For couples getting married on the Otago Peninsula, Smails Beach is one of Dunedin's hidden gems for wedding photography. What If It Rains?

Dunedin sometimes gets a bad reputation for its weather, but the reality is that truly wet wedding days are surprisingly rare. In more than 20 years and over 200 weddings, we've only experienced a handful where it genuinely rained all day. More often than not, it's a brief shower followed by sunshine, or a day of changing conditions that simply requires a little flexibility.

One of the advantages of working with an experienced Dunedin wedding photographer is having a backup plan. We always keep an eye on the forecast and know a range of sheltered locations, wet-weather options and venues that work well when conditions aren't ideal. If the weather changes unexpectedly, it's usually just a matter of adapting rather than panicing.

The truth is that rain doesn't ruin wedding photographs. In fact, cloudy conditions often create some of the most flattering light for portraits. Bright sunshine can produce harsh shadows and squinting eyes, while overcast skies act like a giant softbox, creating beautiful, even light that photographers love working with.

Rain can also create unique photographic opportunities. Reflections in puddles, dramatic skies, umbrellas and the atmosphere that comes with changing weather can all add character and variety to a wedding gallery. Some of our favourite photographs over the years have been taken on days when the weather wasn't perfect.

The most important thing is not to let the forecast distract you from enjoying your wedding day. The weather is one of the few things nobody can control, and your guests won't remember whether it rained for ten minutes. They'll remember the celebration, the people and the atmosphere. With a little planning and a willingness to adapt, rain is rarely more than a minor inconvenience.

Family Photo Tips

Family photographs may not be the most exciting part of the wedding day, but over time they often become some of the most important. Years from now, these are the photographs that capture generations of family together and become treasured reminders of the people who shared your wedding day.

The key to making family photos stress-free is organisation. I always recommend creating a list of every family photograph you would like before the wedding day. Having a clear list means we can work through the combinations quickly and efficiently without forgetting anyone important. It also removes the stress of trying to remember names and relationships while guests are eager to get to the celebrations.

At the same time, try not to make the list too long. Family photographs can quickly start to feel like they go on forever if there are too many combinations. Focus on the groups that genuinely matter and the photographs you'll still value in twenty years' time rather than trying to photograph every possible combination of relatives.

If your family situation is more complicated, such as divorced parents, blended families or sensitive relationships, let us know beforehand. A little planning goes a long way and helps ensure everyone feels comfortable while keeping the process running smoothly.

I also recommend asking a confident family member or friend to help gather people when it's time for photographs. They usually know who belongs where and can quickly track down anyone who has wandered off to the bar, the bathroom or the canapé table.

Most importantly, don't forget the VIPs. Grandparents, elderly relatives and family members who have travelled long distances are often the photographs that become most valuable with time. While it can be tempting to rush through family photos and get back to the party, taking a few extra minutes to capture the people who matter most is always worth it.

Planning Your Wedding Timeline

One of the biggest surprises for most couples is just how quickly a wedding day passes. Months or years of planning are over in what feels like the blink of an eye, so having a realistic timeline can make a huge difference to how relaxed and enjoyable the day feels.

Most weddings we photograph in Dunedin have a ceremony start time between 2pm and 3pm, although there are certainly no hard and fast rules. Every wedding is different and the best timeline is the one that suits your plans, priorities and venue.

As photographers, we usually like to start with the boys around midday and spend 45 to 60 minutes capturing the final preparations, details and a few relaxed photographs before the day gets underway. We then visit the girls for around 60 to 75 minutes. There is often a little more happening at this stage of the day, with hair, makeup, dresses, details and family interactions all providing wonderful storytelling opportunities.

We also like to arrive at the ceremony venue at least 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. This gives us time to photograph the venue, decorations and guests arriving, helping to tell the complete story of the day rather than just the ceremony itself.

Most wedding ceremonies last around 30 minutes and are followed by congratulations, family photographs and group photos. Once those are complete, there is usually 90 minutes available for bridal party photographs and relaxed portraits before guests begin moving towards the reception.

One of the most common pieces of advice we give couples is to allow more time than you think you'll need. Almost every part of a wedding day takes a little longer than expected, and building some breathing room into the schedule helps keep everyone relaxed. It also allows us to create beautiful photographs without making you feel rushed from one location to the next.

Above all, remember that your wedding day is not a military operation. Timelines are helpful, but flexibility is just as important. The best photographs often happen in the moments between the schedule — a laugh with friends, a quiet moment together or an unexpected interaction that nobody planned. The day will disappear faster than you can imagine, so leave yourself enough time to enjoy it.
